How to Identify Authentic Manuka
The Manuka market is full of imitations, so knowing how to spot the real thing matters. Look for a certified MGO (and/or UMF) rating, genuine New Zealand origin, and clear testing and traceability. Manuka honey is a natural wholefood, not a medicine, and we make no medical claims about it.
What makes Manuka unique
Genuine Manuka comes from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) in New Zealand. Its signature compounds are methylglyoxal (MGO) and its precursor dihydroxyacetone (DHA).
How to check authenticity

MGO / UMF rating: look for a certified rating (e.g. MGO 300+ or UMF 10+).

Origin: confirm it was packed in New Zealand.

Certification & testing: reputable brands publish independent test results.

Colour & taste: Manuka is typically dark amber, thick, with an earthy, herbal flavour.
Watch out for adulteration
Honey is one of the most counterfeited foods. Some products are diluted with cheap sugar syrups (such as high-fructose corn syrup) or have additives. Vague labels ("pure", "natural") and very low prices are red flags — if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Where to buy
Choose trusted brands that are transparent about sourcing and testing, whether online or in store, and check for the MGO rating and NZ origin.
Store your honey in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, sealed in its jar.
