The Potency of Raw Manuka Honey

"Potency" comes up a lot with Manuka honey — here's what it actually means, and why raw, unheated honey matters. Manuka honey is a natural wholefood, not a medicine, and we make no medical claims about it.

What is Manuka honey?

Manuka honey is made by bees from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand. Its signature compound is methylglyoxal (MGO).

What "potency" means: the MGO grade

The potency of Manuka honey is described by its MGO rating — the concentration of methylglyoxal in mg/kg. The higher the number, the higher the grade. We guarantee and certify the MGO level of every batch.

Why raw and unheated matters

We never heat our honey, which helps protect its natural enzymes, texture and flavour. Raw honey keeps more of what makes it special.

Choosing a genuine, potent Manuka

  • Look for a certified MGO rating.
  • Choose honey genuinely sourced from New Zealand.
  • Check for independent testing and traceability.
  • Dark, UV-protective packaging helps preserve quality.

Enjoy Manuka honey as part of a balanced diet. Never give honey to infants under 12 months.
