Does Heat Affect Manuka Honey's Benefits?

A common question: does adding Manuka honey to a hot drink destroy its goodness? Here's a practical guide. Manuka honey is a natural wholefood, not a medicine, and we make no medical claims about it.

What's in Manuka honey

Manuka honey naturally contains methylglyoxal (MGO), polyphenols, oligosaccharides and delicate enzymes. We never heat our honey during packing, so these are well preserved in the jar.

Does heat affect it?

MGO is relatively heat-stable, so a spoonful in a warm cup of tea is fine. It's very high, prolonged heat you want to avoid — that can degrade the delicate natural enzymes (such as glucose oxidase) and affect flavour.

Temperature Effect on the honey
Warm (around 60–70°C / 140–158°F) Fine for a spoonful in tea
Brief exposure up to ~90°C Generally okay
Prolonged boiling or microwaving Can degrade enzymes and flavour

Tips for hot drinks

  • Let boiling water cool for a minute before stirring the honey in.
  • Avoid microwaving honey or simmering it for long periods.
  • Stir well so it dissolves evenly.

Storage

Keep your jar sealed in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. Honey naturally keeps for a very long time.
