Why is Manuka Honey So Expensive?

Manuka honey carries a premium price — here's why. From the brief flowering of the Manuka tree to the labour-intensive harvest, several rare factors drive its cost. Manuka honey is a natural wholefood, not a medicine, and we make no medical claims about it.

What makes Manuka honey unique

Unlike conventional honeys, Manuka contains a distinctive natural profile, including methylglyoxal (MGO), its precursor DHA, and leptosperin. MGO is the marker we grade and certify, and Manuka can contain far higher levels of these compounds than ordinary honey — part of what makes it so sought after.

The life cycle of the Manuka flower

The Manuka tree flowers for just 2–6 weeks a year, giving bees a narrow window to gather nectar.

Pollination

To make a high-grade monofloral Manuka, bees need to focus on Manuka flowers during that short bloom. It's estimated to take around 25,000 bee trips to gather enough nectar for a single 250g jar.

Geographic limits

Manuka grows wild in remote regions of New Zealand, in specific microclimates, which naturally restricts supply.

Quality, rarity & certification

MGO, DHA and leptosperin levels vary from flower to flower, so genuine producers test and certify every batch. That testing, the short season, the geography and the labour all add up — which is why authentic Manuka commands a premium.

Market demand

As global demand grows and supply stays limited, prices rise. Paying more for certified, traceable Manuka is how you know you're getting the real thing.
